Protecting Computer Systems With Antivirus Software

Tuesday 29 April 2008 @ 10:47 pm

Computers all over the world are susceptible to increased virus threats these days. Preventing viruses from attacking computers has nearly become an obsession for anti virus software developers. Even large corporations like Microsoft have been exposed to virus attacks.

Before the advent of internet, the spread of computer viruses was largely limited to manual transmission through floppy disks. Hence it was much easier to detect and eliminate viruses before they could do any large scale damage to a computer system. All that was required was a scan of the floppy disk by antivirus software before copying the files from it to the computer. The spread of the virus to other computers was thus slow.

The rising popularity of internet has changed the situation completely. The virus can now spread very fast from one system to another through internet as the medium. The virus could spread through various means: emails and their attachments, instant messages, peer to peer to sharing of files, software downloads etc. They can spread automatically without any manual intervention and can enter the system in multiple ways, exposing the vulnerability of the system. With the convergence of technologies like computers and communication through mobile devices, the threat of computer viruses is raising by the day.

Protecting the computer from viruses

The antivirus software technology has kept pace with the various types of virus threats and has become inseparable part of a computer system today. The antivirus software products can thwart attempts by viruses to enter a computer system through emails, internet browsers, file servers and other desktops in a network. They also have a centralized system of deploying the software as well configuring it to a particular system and updating of the software.

The following lists some of the steps a computer user must take for protection against virus threats.

  1. The first step in protecting your computer system against viruses is to evaluate the current antivirus software that is being used to find out if it is adequate and covers all possible forms of threats. A computer network with desktops and servers with connection to the internet requires anti virus software with many features like firewall, antivirus, content filtering and spyware detection. All the components of the system like desktops, server, gateway etc. need to be protected from external threats.

  2. The antivirus software needs to be regularly updated against new virus threats emerging everyday. The reputation of the company that developed the antivirus software is important in this respect. The software should have real time scanning feature that automatically starts scanning the files in the computer as well as any incoming messages, software etc. when the system is booted up.

  3. All new programs should be compulsorily scanned irrespective of their place of origin.

  4. Attachments to emails or instant messages in any form from unknown sources should not be opened without ascertaining that they are free from virus.

  5. Taking regular backups of important files in the system will ensure quick recovery of the system in case of a virus attack.

Beginning with Freshwater Aquariums

Tuesday 29 April 2008 @ 10:14 pm

Many people choose to select a freshwater aquarium for their home. People generally find that properly caring for the freshwater aquarium is easier than caring for the saltwater aquarium. This is why this particular type of aquarium is the most popular choice when it comes to selecting an aquarium. When a person is just starting out with fish as pets, it is recommended that they start with a freshwater aquarium. There are numerous types of fish that can be added to the freshwater aquarium. These include the tropical fish, as well as the coldwater fish.

When you purchase your freshwater aquarium, and set it up for the first time, there are many things that you should consider. The first thing is the location where you will placer the freshwater aquarium in the home. You should never place the freshwater aquarium around windows, heating and cooling units in the home, and doors. However, it is important that the freshwater aquarium is placed in an area of the home that has a temperature that remains about the same each day. You should also place the freshwater aquarium in a location where there is plenty of light, both sunlight, and indoor light.

Once you have found a suitable area in the home to place your freshwater aquarium, you can now measure the area to determine how much space that you have to work with. You can choose to start with a very small freshwater aquarium, or a large freshwater aquarium. It is also important that you take into consideration the mounting device for the freshwater aquarium. You can choose to purchase a stand for the freshwater aquarium, or you may use a table or other structure to place the freshwater aquarium on. However, the item that you place your freshwater aquarium on should be sturdy. It should be able to hold the weight of the freshwater aquarium that you choose, and it should not be able to sway from one side to another.

When you purchase a freshwater aquarium, there are many things that you should purchase in addition to the actual aquarium. This includes the filtering system that is appropriate to the overall size of the aquarium, the filters for the filtering system, the medicines that may be required for your fish, gravel and various plants and structures for your aquarium, lighting units for the aquarium, and food that is appropriate for the type of fish that you purchase for your aquarium. You may also be required to purchase a heater for the aquarium, depending on the type of fish that you purchase.

When you purchase fish for the freshwater aquarium that you buy, you should research the fish carefully. There are some fish that have special requirements when they are placed in a freshwater aquarium. There are also fish that cannot live in the same freshwater aquarium environment as other types of fish. You should make sure that you know what kinds of fish are able to live with other types of fish, and any special needs that the fish may have.

Aromatherapy Gift Baskets

Tuesday 29 April 2008 @ 10:07 pm

Finding the perfect gift for someone can be quite challenging. Finding a gift that is perfect for any occasion can be even more of a challenge. There are many common gifts, such as clothes and perfumes. If you want to stray away from the common, give a gift that is inexpensive, and unique, then you should consider aromatherapy gift baskets.

Aromatherapy has been used for centuries. It is the process of taking various scents, applying them to the surrounding environment in order to achieve the relief of certain mental and physical ailments. Aromatherapy has found to be successful in its endeavors, and to have no negative side effects.

If you want to give a gift of an aromatherapy gift basket, you should consider the person that you are buying for carefully. Does the person suffer from stress? Does the person suffer from insomnia? Do they have many headaches? Do they often complain of never being able to relax? Once you have pinpointed something of this nature about the person, you will want to create an aromatherapy gift basket that focuses on the main theme ?such as headache relief, stress relief, etc?

While you can purchase an aromatherapy gift basket that focuses on a common theme, such as stress relief, these are often high priced. It is more frugal to create an aromatherapy gift basket yourself. You can visit thrift stores in your city and find a beautiful selection of baskets ranging from ten cents to two dollars apiece. Most of these baskets are in wonderful condition and the selection is unbelievable. Additionally, many of these baskets are unique in nature. The selection of a basket is the first step in creating the aromatherapy gift basket.

Once you have found a basket, you will want to go to your local dollar store and purchase some tissue paper to line the basket with. You can find all kinds of tissue paper ranging from plain to glitter. There is also tissue paper out there that has nice little pictures and designs. Once you have your tissue paper, simply line the bottom of the basket with a piece of this.

While you are at the dollar store shopping for tissue paper, look around at the candle and incense section. They usually have a wide variety of candles and incense that can be used for aromatherapy. If there are not specific aromatherapy assortments, you may have to do an online search prior to visiting the store so that you can know which colors and scents play a role in the ailment that you are buying for. For example, Lavender is a relaxing scent. If you are in search of candles and incense that will help a person relax, you would search for lavender candles and incense.

You may also want to go to the bath section and look for beads, soaps, and bubble baths that center around the main theme of your gift basket and throw these items in the basket as well. This will ensure that the person has a wide variety of aromatherapy products to work with.

Once you have gathered all of these items, try to find a clear plastic bag that is large enough to place the basket in. Take your bag, place the basket neatly down in it, and gather the sides and top of the bag together on top of the basket. After gathering up the sides, place a rubber band around the top to close the bag. You may then take a ribbon, or strings of flowers, and tie it into a nice bow at top. Your aromatherapy gift basket is now complete!

Basics of Allergic Asthma

Tuesday 29 April 2008 @ 10:01 pm

Asthma makes it hard for a person to breathe because the airways are shortened in the body. Allergic asthma is a type of asthma that is triggered by some kind of allergy. Allergic asthma is important to watch for, as it can be dangerous and can make it hard for a person to breathe if it is not handled. It can usually be handled by avoiding things that cause the allergies that cause allergic asthma, but there are other methods of treatment that can be used to help control the problem.

In allergic asthma an asthma attack is caused by things in the environment. These include naturally occurring items like pollen and pet dander. The best way to avoid an allergic asthma attack is to find out what you are allergic to. By talking with your doctor you can get more information on what you should avoid. An allergy test under the supervision of your doctor can help you to find out what your allergies are. This is needed so that you will have a better idea of what to avoid in the future.

An allergy test is performed to check to see what causes allergic asthma, and it follows a simple process. In the allergy test the doctor will make some minor injections around the side of your spine. Some materials will be injected into the area, and if any parts become inflamed and red as a result then it will be found that you are allergic to some kind of material. This helps so that you can get the right information on what to watch for to avoid an allergic asthma attack.

Of course, some medicines are needed to treat allergic asthma. An inhaler may be prescribed in many cases.

However, the main part of preventing allergic asthma attacks from occurring is to make some sacrifices in life. For instance, you may have to give up any pets that you have if you are found to be allergic to pet dander. Also, if you are allergic to pollen it is best to avoid being outdoors for long periods of time in the spring when pollen is especially present. When these suggestions may be different to handle and become adjusted to it is important to make sure that you follow these tips to help keep allergic asthma attacks from occurring.

Allergic asthma is caused by allergies that people have. It can make it difficult to breathe, but with the right methods of treatment and by finding out what you are allergic to you can keep from having an allergic asthma attack. It can help to make your life easier, as you don’t have to be ruled by allergic asthma.

Caring for Your Skin after a Wart Removal Procedure

Monday 28 April 2008 @ 9:48 pm

When it comes to wart removal, a large amount of focus is placed on the removal itself. While it is important to focus on the actual removal process, it is also important to keep in mind what will happen afterwards. If you are planning on having one of your warts removed, you are advised to examine the care that is needed, after your wart or warts have been removed.

Perhaps, the first step in caring for your wound, which was likely created after your wart or warts were removed, is to know what you need to do. If you are having your wart professionally removed, by a dermatologist or by your family doctor, you should be provided with detailed information. In addition to detailed information, there is also a good chance that you would also be sent home with supplies. These supplies may include, but are not be limited to, bandages, pads, and antibiotic cream.

Although you can receive the best after removal care advice from a physician, you may not be able to get that information. If you are performing your own at home wart removal, you will need to familiarize yourself with the proper ways to care for your wounds. This can easily be done with the internet. Online, you should be able to find a number of different medical websites. These medical websites are likely to contain information, tips, and advice for those who just had a wart removed. Of course, you are advised to be cautious and consider where you are getting your information from, but if it is from a reliable place, you will want to follow the instructions given to you.

Whether you get information, on caring for your wart wound, from the doctor who performed the removal or the internet, it is likely that you will be provided with similar instructions. Perhaps, the most important instructions to follow is keeping your wounds clean. Depending on the type of wound you have, which will also depend on the wart removal method used, you may have a small wound or scab. If this part of your skin is not properly cleaned, on a regular basis, it may become infected. In most cases, simple soap and water should be enough.

In addition to keeping your wound or scab clean, you will also want to keep it covered. This will help, not only to keep it clean, but it should also prevent an infection from forming. When covering the area, it should be enough to use a regular bandage. It may also be a good idea to apply antibiotic cream on the spot. However, it is important to remember that some wart removers, such as some freeze-off wart removal products, caution you against using any skin creams, at least for a certain period of time. It is not exactly sure why this is, but you are advised to follow all direction, especially if you purchase an over-the-counter wart remover.

Once your wound has started to heal, a scab may begin to form and new skin may start to grow. When this occurs, it is important that you leave everything alone. In fact, that is why it is advised that you always keep the area covered. Picking or even touching the area could not only create an infection, but it could also hurt the healing process. If the healing process is interrupted, you may end up developing a permanent scar. With wart removal, there is always a chance that a scar could develop, but it all depends. To lesser your chances of having a scar, you need to refrain from messing with the scab or new skin that begins to develop.

If you notice any complications, such as a wound that will not heal or one that is extremely painful, you may want to consider seeking medical advice. Although the problem may only be temporary or minor, it is still nice to be on the safe side. Not everyone thinks about the complications associated with wart removal. If you do, there will be a better chance of nothing going wrong.

Are You A Stock Market Investor?

Monday 28 April 2008 @ 12:23 pm

The threshold question before you decide to invest in the stock market is whether you are an investor. For some people the stock market may not be suited to their personality. This article addresses some of the qualities an investor should have in order to make a reasonable return in the stock market.

Sure, there are folk tales you may hear about the guy who bought XYZ Company stock for $5 and sold it 60 days later for $50 a share. This scenario probably has happened , but it is not the reality of being an investor. The following points should be considered when you are considering becoming an investor.

Are you self-disciplined in your thinking?

The first step anyone must take into account is their own personality. Are you objectively a person who is organized in your thinking? Do you know how much money you have to invest? Do you know how to set objectives in your finances? Have you set goals for savings and followed through on those objectives? An investor has to have a clear set of objectives in their choice of investments. Is the amount of money you intend to invest a one time wind fall? Are you able to set aside a certain amount of money each month to investing that is disposable income?

In effect what you will be doing is moving some of your pass book savings to an investment. Patterns development in peoples lives. Are you able to transfer your savings pattern to include a regular investment in the stock market? If you are currently earning a small percentage on your pass book savings account what rate of return would you be satisfied in receiving? The key to investing is to know your expenses and income and decide how much money is disposable income. It is this excess that will be your investment dollars.

Are you able to set goals and listen to good advise?

Once you have determined that investing may be a possible avenue for you to consider the next step is setting goals. A goal is the objective of your investment. It could be for retirement, a vacation home, a rainy day fund or a new boat. Whatever your is determines the type of investing you will be looking for in your research. If it is a long term goal like retirement you may seek a tax exempt municipal bond fund or a mutual fund with certain characteristics. If you want liquidity like a pass book savings account where you can draw money as you need it there are some investments that may fit. The important aspect of this step is to know your objectives and then draw up a budget or a plan.

All of the major fund companies have managers and consultants. Are you able to set forth your objectives and ask for advice in picking out a fund that will fit your needs? This does not mean you need to sign up for the first consultant who takes your call. It means can you listen to advice and make a decision on various alternatives offered to you. After you have gathered all the information you believe is necessary for your decision can you apply your personal goals with the information presented and make a final decision?

This may seem like an odd inquiry, can you make a final decision? Unfortunately, some people will feel quite comfortable going to a car show room and purchase a $30,000 automobile. The color, impression, and internal motivators. But when it comes to investing, the buy is not as dazzling. It takes consideration to commit $30,000 to an investment in paper form even though you may be purchasing stock in the flashy car company.

Can You Let Go?

The final and perhaps most important aspect of deciding if you are a stock investor is, YOU. After you have gone through all of the self analysis, goals, research and advice of others and made your final decision the next step is critical. Do you have the personality to allow your investment to take its course? Can you sleep at night? Unless you are a day trader who plays the upside and downside of the stock market and I would not recommend this to anyone starting out. You have to be able to roll with the punches. Trust your instincts and review your investment on a monthly or quarterly basis. If you buy individual stocks, place a limit order on the account. A limit order allows your broker or on-line account to sell if the price goes down.

The mutual fund investment works differently that buying individual stocks. If you are satisfied that your choice of a fund met all of your criteria for investing let it alone and review it only periodically. If your mutual fund for any reason meets with unexpected long term problems you can change funds. I would review the fund on a quarterly basis and discuss this with the fund account manager or representative.

This is the investor personality that you need to have in order to have a lifetime of success in the stock market. If you have it, it works. If you don’t, try another type of investment.

What is a Virtual School

Friday 25 April 2008 @ 11:44 am

Public schools have jumped on the bandwagon of providing distance education for students all over the country. Slowly cropping up on a state-by-state basis are virtual schools. Many families are unfamiliar with exactly what a virtual school is. In essence, virtual schools are distance education schools run by the public school system within a state. They offer instruction through web-based applications that students complete at home. They are responsible for any state testing requirements and the virtual school keeps regular records of academic achievement.

States with virtual schools offer curriculum for students in grades kindergarten through twelfth. Depending upon the state, some virtual schools currently offer virtual education for middle and high school students. A few states claim to offer virtual schools for the complete K-12 scope. Many schools offer a complete curriculum, while others that are still in the developmental phase offer a few classes in many different subjects. Double check with the virtual school you are interested in on whether or not they offer a diploma. Some schools will offer a full curriculum, but do not include the diploma.

Some states with virtual schools include: Florida, Michigan, Louisiana, and Missouri. Virtual schools may or may not charge tuition. If the school is funded by the state, then classes will be funded for students. Some states charge tuition just like a private school would. Most of the virtual schools available allow students from other states to enroll. This allows students in states without virtual schools to take advantage of distance education. Tuition will be higher for students who enroll in an out of state virtual school.

Virtual schools are held to the same high standard as regular public schools. Instructors are certified teachers who work only for the virtual school, or work for the virtual school as part of their contract with the school district. Virtual schools work hard to provide high school students with similar school life experiences. Some schools offer high school clubs students can join once they are enrolled in the virtual school. Some of those clubs include the international club, foreign language club, science club and even virtual school newspapers for future journalists. The school may even offer an online science fair students participate in and win. In addition, since virtual schools are technically public online schools, students may be eligible to play sports. Each district will vary on their acceptance of virtual school students for sports, so call the district and ask about their policy before you enroll a sports loving student.

There is some confusion among parents on whether or not virtual schools are homeschools. In essence, virtual schools are not homeschools. Virtual schools consider students to be public school students and get state money for their enrollment. The school keeps all records and requires that students meet state testing requirements.

Many states do not require testing or records for homeschooled students, so virtual school students are still under control of the public school system. If you are looking to leave government controlled education, then virtual schools would not be the answer. If you are looking for a way to keep your child safe at home while still getting an excellent education, then virtual schools may just be the answer for you.

Trapping Birds for Food

Friday 25 April 2008 @ 11:39 am

Wild birds are often abundant in many environments. If you are in need of food for survival, those flying creatures may begin to look appealing. What birds are safe to eat in outdoor survival situations? How can you nab one of those flying birds to use for food?

If you are in need of food, rest assured that all birds are edible and safe to eat. None of the birds are poisonous. Be careful to select healthy animals whenever possible to reduce risk of disease.

To trap birds for consumption, it is helpful for you to know something about birds and their habits. Some birds, such as pigeons, can be captured by hand during the night right from their roost. Using this method of trapping your bird for food can be a simple method requiring little skill.

You should learn where and when specific species of birds make their nests. During nesting season, some birds refuse to leave their nests. Be aware of this fact to help trap your next meal.

Take a class to learn the different bird calls. Listening to the sounds of the birds in the environment can give you insight to what types of birds are available to hunt. The knowledge of certain birds can be extremely beneficial in a survival situation.

Observe the pattern of birds in the environment to encourage your survival. Frequently, birds will use similar paths from the nest to water, for instance. Place nets in these areas across the flight path of the birds to trap the animals.

Watering holes and roosting areas are excellent places to find dinner if you are getting hungry. You may think that eating a cute, feathered friend is unappealing, but when hunger strikes, you will be better able to overcome this concern to prolong your survival. Trap or snare animals in these promising places easily.

If you are fortunate enough to come across a nest, you may find yet another food source. Eggs are great for providing nourishment in a survival situation. Mark two or three eggs and remove the rest from the nest. The bird will continue to lay eggs to fill the nest. Always leave the marked eggs, but take the unmarked eggs as needed.

As you fight for your life to survive the wilderness, turn to birds for food. Trapping birds and collecting eggs can provide nourishment, giving you the energy you need to survive. Learning about birds and their habits can improve your odds of trapping dinner. Educate yourself about the different bird calls, too. Practice preparing wild birds for consumption. This skill can be useful if you should ever find yourself lost or stranded in the wilderness in need of food for survival. There are techniques that make preparation of birds for eating, much easier.

Since birds are frequently abundant in most environments, it is important to learn about their behavior and preparation. Practice identifying bird calls in the woods when on a hike. Learning about birds can help you be better prepared for survival in the event of an emergency.
